This year was off to a great start at Yeshivat Merkaz Hatorah preschool! The morot began the year by preparing for Rosh Hashanah in each classroom, all while transitioning into our new classrooms and settings. The students learned about the three “T”s that are very important especially during the month of Elul: teshuva, tefillah, and tzedakah. The students experienced a very interactive and hands on learning method as they learned about all of the simanim through tasting and touching them, blowing the shofar and hearing its strong sounds, and of course, dipping an apple in honey as a sweet treat. We learned about the different parts of an apple, how an apple grows, and got to pick some apples from an apple tree to bake our yummy cake. Before going home, the kindergarten class mailed out letters to their Imas and Abbas wishing them a sweet new year. When the children came back from Rosh Hashanah, they immediately began learning about Yom Kippur. The children learned about the importance of asking for forgiveness and practiced saying “I’m Sorry” to each other and learned all about the meaning of asking for forgiveness.

i Then, all of the classes learned about kaparot. We got to see the chickens and different ways to do kaparot. The children learned that we don’t wear leather shoes, adults don’t eat or drink, and how important it is to be quiet during tefillah if we go to Beit Knesset. Immediately after Yom Kippur, the children learned about Sukkot in all of the classes. They learned about our special guests called ushpizin, what a Sukkah is made out of, and how to shake the lulav and etrog. All of the classes took turns going to see real sukkot on Main Street and they also saw super big etrogim downstairs. The children were so busy making beautiful decorations for their sukkahs at home and all of the children were also excited to make flags for Simchat Torah! All of the classes went down to the Beit Knesset to open the Aron Hakodesh and see the Sifrei Torah. Each child got to see a Sefer Torah up close and took turns kissing it. The children are all so excited to be back in school and we all can’t wait to see what the morot have in store for the rest of the year!
