Galit Nisanov of Kew Gardens was named valedictorian of Touro’s New York School of Career and Applied Studies. Nisanov is one of the school’s 675 baccalaureates and 413 associate degree candidates for 2018. The Manhattan Campus celebrated their commencement ceremony on June 13 at Lincoln Center’s David Geffen Hall.
An A student, Nisanov is graduating with a GPA of 3.98. “You have to be focused and committed to a goal,” she states. “Getting to know the professors, understanding what they expect of you and taking every opportunity to challenge yourself to learn more than simply what’s required is a key to academic
success.”Nisanov, who plans to become a speech therapist, is dedicated to using her education to help others. After taking speech lessons in elementary school, she was impressed by how much her speech improved and wants others to experience those benefits. She credits Touro with giving her the opportunity to gain an excellent education and mingle with diverse students within a Jewish environment.
As part of her commitment to helping others, Nisanov finds many ways to volunteer. In her synagogue, she teaches Judaic Studies and in her neighborhood, she tutors teenagers in math, science and history. Nisanov also volunteers with the Long Island-based Sister to Sister organization, helping out women and their children.
