On Sunday July 15th, the Alliance of Bukharian Americans (ABA) held its second Annual State of the Community Address. This was an opportunity for some of the most active members of the community to meet and greet our local politicians. The ABA took great pride in arranging this event, and was happy to witness the blossoming of what is sure to become great relationships between the Bukharian community and its Statesmen and Stateswomen. Many of our local politicians took the opportunity to meet with the crowd at Elite Palace.

The ABA’s Ilya Mordukhaev delivered the opening remarks. He updated the crowd on the rapid growth of the Bukharian community’s political infrastructure. He mentioned the ABA’s new hotline and its usefulness for integrating services for the community. He also demonstrated the ABA’s resolution for growth by introducing the attendees to the ABA’s new Executive Director, Adam Suionov. Ilya also highlighted the hotline’s primary focuses of Education & Youth, Health, Housing, Adult Services and Food needs. He went over many of the ABA’s activities such as setting up a Mobile Legal Help Center along with Russian and Hebrew translators. He also mentioned the ABA’s joint efforts with the Orthodox Union in advocacy on Capitol Hill and Albany.

Ilya then acknowledged and introduced the politicians who came to the event. They included, amongst significant others, City Councilman Barry Grodenchik, Councilman Rory Lancman, Public Advocate and Attorney General Candidate Letitia James, Assemblyman Daniel Rosenthal, Congresswoman Grace Meng’s representative Rabbi Pollick, and Senator Joseph Addabbo’s representative Jonathan Dembitzer.

Ilya then gave the floor to some of the politicians, who all reflected on their deep relationship with the Bukharian community and their enthusiasm to work together. ABA Executive Director Adam Suionov followed with closing remarks, outlining the ABA’s ambitions and plans. He discussed the ABA’s desire to support autonomous initiatives and invited the guests to meet and greet the gathered politicians and representatives.

Over the next year, the ABA will continue to provide a high-level of representation, and constantly looks to comments and suggestions from the community.
