Prior to winter break, Yeshiva of Central Queens first graders received their own siddurim. Each class performed a play for their families, morot and YCQ administration. Upon receiving their siddurim, they learned and read their first words with Rabbi Michael Ribalt, assistant principal for Judaic Studies in the elementary school. First grade Morah, Leah Greenwald said, “Kittah aleph celebrated with siddur plays. They learned a story about a siddur who did not have any friends because the children did not know how to read. So, the children learned, and they became friends because they learned to read with kavannah.” When asked why getting their first siddur was important, Suri Lalo said that, “I enjoy singing to HaShem,” Sarah Barzideh said I loved getting my siddur and I loved everything about the play,” and Miriam Guttman said she likes that, “I am closer to HaShem.”
Ronit Torbati, assistant Morah enjoys working with the children on their siddur plays because it creates great memories and excitement about learning and davening from their siddurim. The Baal Shem Tov was always so happy when he davened. We learn from this that whenever you work hard for something, even if you loved it before, you now appreciate and love it even more. This is a lesson the first-grade students will carry with them throughout their education and life times.
