On Sunday afternoon, Erev Tu BiSh’vat, and at the start of Yeshivah Week, Uncle Moishy, Cousin Nachum, the Mitzvah Men, and the Twins from France visited us in Queens. By the time the performance began, the social hall of the Young Israel of Kew Gardens Hills was completely packed with around 500 people; the standing-room-only turnout overflowed with families. Kids sat crisscross along the perimeter of the “stage” and excitedly clapped and cheered when “everybody’s favorite uncle” bounded in, singing, playing his guitar, and bringing so much merriment to an otherwise cold and rainy day. Uncle Moishy’s friends Pizza and Ice Cream Cone added color to the show (though it turns out my daughter was afraid of the costumed characters!), illustrating some of his classic songs. Uziel Martin, who used to live in KGH but traveled to Queens with his family all the way from Highland Park, New Jersey, said, “Uncle Moishy was entertaining for me as well as my family. I enjoyed the comedy that was accessible regardless of age.” Indeed, kids of all ages, as well as adults, seemed to enjoy the show.

The Twins from France danced into the room halfway through the show, taking over the stage. They bounced on pogo sticks, rode unicycles, flipped, and cartwheeled, and even included their very tall (on stilts!), clumsy “grandfather” in the performance. They brought both kids and adults up from the audience to participate in their acrobatic tricks, keeping the show exciting for everyone. As always is the case with this duo, the audience laughed at their antics, was brought into the suspense of their more daring tricks, and was amazed by their skills and agility.

This was the first time Chazaq and Queens Shmira co-sponsored a children’s event, though of course the men of Shmira have helped out at many of Chazaq’s events in the past. At this show, too, they were on hand to control the influx of people and to keep everyone safe during the show. “Chazaq is happy to team up with Shmira in hosting this fun-filled program for the entire community. We look forward to, b’ezras Hashem, organizing many more similar events,” said Yaniv Meirov, Chazaq’s Operations Manager. Queens Shmira responded that they would like to publicly “thank Chazaq and the community for their endless support. Because of the support, we can continue to keep the Queens community safe.” We’re so grateful to have these terrific organizations in our community, especially when they bring fun events for everyone to share!
