YSZ had the great zechut of greeting HaRav HaGaon Nissim Ben Shimon shlit"a this morning. The rav is a renowned talmid chacham, mekubal, Rosh Av Bet Din of Tel Aviv, and member of the Moetzet Chachmei HaTorah.
Young, vibrant voices of our talmidim singing "יחיד א-ל דגול" could be heard as the rav entered the building and walked through our hallways. The rav gave words of brachah and advice as he visited the beit medrash and classrooms.
In blessing our students the rav gave encouragement and sage advice: One should never give up on learning just because he sees his friend is excelling better. Often, those of us who struggle rise above others who have it easy. Torah is sweet when we understand it. If it is not sweet, then we must not have understood its beauty and need to try again to uncover its joy. Listening to one's parents is a method to get brachah in learning and in life.
Regarding friends, we must be careful of peers who can have a bad influence. We might think that poor friends won't change us, but we must be careful because slowly they might have a lasting influence.
May HaGaon Nissim Ben Shimon's words of forethought and encouragement be a zechut for Yeshiva Sha'arei Zion as we are in the midst of the Yamim Nora'im and gearing up for the upcoming year.
