Successful Blood Drive hosted by ABA Health Committee in Great Neck

On Sunday, February 2, the Alliance of Bukharian Americans Health Committee (ABAHC) held a long-awaited comeback blood drive in Great Neck, marking its return after a three-year hiatus. The event saw 53 individuals step up to donate, resulting in a total of 46 pints of blood collected—each with the potential to save up to three lives.

Sponsored by Maimonides Medical Center, the blood drive was held at Torah Ohr Hebrew Academy, which generously donated its Simcha Hall for the day. Volunteers and donors were treated to a pizza and sushi lunch, courtesy of Queens College’s Emet Student Association.

The event also provided the opportunity for participants to swab and register their information with Gift of Life Marrow Registry, making them eligible to be contacted for potential life-saving stem cell donations and marrow transplants if they are a match.

With a current nationwide blood shortage, donations are more critical than ever. The ABAHC is actively searching for synagogues in the Bukharian community which are willing to host future blood drives to help meet this urgent need.
