No organization knows kosher food in New York better than Met Council. As the largest free kosher food distributor in America and the organization behind the largest free Pesach food distribution in history, Met Council is now launching a major new year-round benefit for low-income New Yorkers: free kosher groceries and prepared meals delivered to eligible households through its Social Care Network initiative.

The new free program connects eligible Medicaid members to ongoing grocery assistance, prepared meals where appropriate, and other critical support services. More than 1 million New Yorkers may qualify for this benefit, which is designed to help families and individuals access nutritious kosher food with dignity long after the Yom Tov season ends.

As Met Council rolls out this expanded support, it is also completing the largest Pesach food distribution in its history. Just hours before Pesach begins, Met Council will have distributed more than 3.5 million pounds of Kosher for Pesach food, reaching more than 350,000 people through 250 distributions conducted in partnership with 230 community organizations and local food pantries.

In the weeks leading up to Pesach, Met Council surged over $6 million worth of food to its pantries, partners, and special distribution sites, including 61,000 pounds of matzah, over 50,000 gallons of grape juice, and 2,300,000 eggs. Other staples distributed included Kosher for Pesach chicken, gefilte fish, tuna, applesauce, borscht, cake mix, chopped walnuts, cocoa powder, jam, lemon juice, macaroons, matzah meal, potato starch, sugar, tomato sauce, vinegar, and fresh fruits and vegetables.

More than 800 volunteers, including government officials and community members, joined the effort, working alongside community partners to pack, organize, and deliver food in a dignified and efficient way.

“This is about much more than food,” said Met Council CEO David Greenfield. “Met Council has long been the address for kosher food assistance in New York, and now we are taking that work to the next level. Through this new benefit, eligible low-income New Yorkers can receive free glatt kosher groceries and prepared meals year-round. We are proud not only to help families for Pesach, but to help working families put food on the table every single week of the year.”

Through the Social Care Network, eligible participants may receive free kosher grocery deliveries, medically tailored meals where appropriate, and additional services that help address food insecurity and related needs.

The goal is to ensure that support continues long after Pesach for families facing ongoing financial pressure.

This year’s Pesach distribution was funded and supported by major partners, including UJA-Federation of New York and Deb El Food Products, which donated 2,100,000 eggs, along with many other generous donors and community partners.

As inflation and economic uncertainty continue to strain household budgets, Met Council remains committed to expanding food access through innovative partnerships, government collaboration, and year-round support for New Yorkers in need.
