Families from across Central Queens gathered at Mauro Playground on Sunday, June 7, for the latest installment of Council Member James F. Gennaro’s Family Days in Queens program.
Presented in partnership with NYC Parks, the event transformed the playground into a lively destination filled with games, crafts, educational exhibits, and outdoor activities.
Young attendees enjoyed a variety of hands-on projects, creating animal-themed pins, magnets, and keychains, decorating colorful kites, and participating in nature-inspired crafts. Inflatable attractions and organized games kept children active throughout the afternoon.
A highlight of the event was an interactive wildlife exhibit presented by The Nature Company, a Brooklyn-based organization that provides environmental education programs for schools, camps, libraries, and community groups. Through educational displays and live-animal programming, children learned about ecosystems, camouflage, reptiles, animal adaptations, and conservation.
The exhibit gave attendees an opportunity to observe specimens up close and gain a greater appreciation for the natural world through hands-on learning experiences.
Throughout the afternoon, families moved between activity stations, wildlife exhibits, games, and recreational areas, enjoying an event that combined entertainment with education.
Family Days in Queens continues to provide free programming in neighborhood parks throughout Council District 24, bringing residents together through a variety of family-oriented activities.
As the event concluded, children left with handmade crafts, new knowledge about wildlife and conservation, and memories of a fun-filled afternoon at the park.
