Roughly 3,000 pounds of frozen pizza that might otherwise have ended up in a landfill instead reached approximately 300 Brooklyn families facing food insecurity on Sunday, July 19.
The pizza arrived on several pallets at Masbia Soup Kitchen Network. Each household received a full case, while DoorDash couriers loaded as many as four deliveries at a time onto motorcycles and scooters, moving the frozen food quickly from Masbia to families’ homes so it would remain frozen.
The effort brought together Tnuva USA, which donated the pizza; DoorDash, which handled the deliveries at a nonprofit rate and fully subsidized some of them; and Masbia, a New York City emergency-food provider operating four locations that serve families through food pantries, hot meals, and home deliveries.
The timing gave the donation added significance. During the Nine Days, many observant families refrain from eating meat and poultry, making dairy foods such as pizza an especially practical and welcome option. For households already struggling to keep enough food on the table, the rescued shipment provided immediate relief with food especially suited to this period.
Instead of being discarded, the pizza became an immediate source of nourishment for hundreds of households. The distribution also kept thousands of pounds of edible food out of the waste stream.
