How precious is a good education? History has taught us that to survive as a nation, education must come first. The proper education can be the difference between preservation and demise. It shapes how we act, how we speak, and the manner in which we live. It is a crucial line of defense that we have against the tides of change which threaten to remove the sanctity of life and life’s important relationships.
Take parental respect as an example, it is such a sensitive topic for the Bukharian community. It is something the older generation takes for granted; but why isn’t respect viewed with the same gravity by the younger generation? The Torah teaches us to respect our parents and our elders. Do we properly value the Torah’s teachings? If we recognize its beauty, our children will see that. They may then come to respect its teachings as they grow older.
Torah education sharpens the mind, structures it, and allows our children to succeed in any path they choose. There are many stories of leaders in different professions and industries who have recognized and valued the product of a Jewish education. Parents may feel uncertain because they think too much time is spent on ‘inapplicable’ content. But it’s important to realize that mental exercise can be more effective than simple memorization. Don’t be surprised to notice how Yeshiva students pick things up much quicker, are more creative and more productive. Of course, a lot depends on the child’s character, but the Torah has what to teach on that as well. And frankly, it does a much better job than the competition.
