It is perhaps the most exciting day on the Jewish calendar between Shavuot and Shivah Asar B'Tammuz, I am of course talking about nomination day! That’s right, today is the day that the nominees for the 2026 Bukharian Broadway Tony Awards are released. This year shows no sign of disappointment as the top productions from 108th Street get their moment in the sun. This year we have new productions, musicals, and revivals all vying for that top prize. But I don’t want to delay the festivities any longer.
I give you the 2026 Bukharian Broadway Tony Nominees:
The Phantom of the Shashmaqam — This revival musical, based off of the novel of the same name, touches on the spooky and supernatural. In 1990, following the mysterious disappearance of the bowed tambur player of an Uzbek Shashmaqam, the remaining band merged with a Tajik Shashmaqam. The Tajik bowed tambur player starts getting ghostly messages and guidance on how he could merge the two musical traditions, as tempers flare between all of the newly collaborating musicians.
Nominated Songs Include:
- The titular, Phantom of Shashmaqam
- All that I Ask of You is ‘Ayn-ayat Ever Shavi
Khujandidoon — When newly betrothed Pinhas and Gul go for a Shabbos afternoon stroll together in Forest Park, they find themselves so deep in conversation that they don’t notice they are lost. Facing a small stone bridge they’ve never encountered before, they cross it and find themselves in the magical town of Khujandidoon, a place seemingly untouched for 300 years and where everyone treats life like a musical. Pinhas and Gul find that in order to leave they first must overcome their own early marriage challenges. Audiences are left guessing if they will make it home in time for Maariv or stay trapped by their stubbornness over where it’s appropriate to drop your dirty socks.
Nominated Songs Include:
- Holvaitar Puddin’
- Waiting for My Aroos
Dear, Boris Kandov — This harrowing coming-of-age musical tells the story of Boris Kandov from his emigration from Uzbekistan to the United States in 1987 to his path of becoming the President of the Bukharian Jewish Congress.
Nominated Songs Include:
- Waving through a Tinted Divider Window (The Limo Song)
- Sincerely, Boris
- Only Congress
RENT…Controlled Apartment on 108th Street — As four rabbinical students from competing yeshivot find themselves all renting apartments in the same rent-controlled building on 108th Street, they learn to come together and build a community. At the same time, they must face their evil landlord who refuses to fix the Shabbos elevator in an attempt to get them to move out so he can raise the rent.
Nominated Songs Include:
- Light My (Shabbos) Candle
- Hora: Yitzach
- Seasons of Torah, also known as 613 Mitzvot
Good luck to all of the nominated productions and please tune in to QPTV (Channel 56 for RCN and Charter subscribers) on June 11 to watch the ceremony play out live.
